Background
Students from Granby High School formed a rowing "crew" team five years ago. They receive no financial support from the high school or from Norfolk Public Schools for this ambitious activity. Although not financially supported; they are permitted to row in the spring as a Granby High School varsity sport. Throughout the school year, the students, parents, guardians, and friends sponsor car washes, yard sales, "row-a-thons," and concession stands to raise the operating budget for the team.
At this exciting time, the team needs to acquire a competitive four-person boat, a competitive eight-person boat, a coaching launch with motor, and a trailer to transport the boats to competitions. To acquire this equipment the Granby High School Crew Team Booster Club, Inc. is launching a $50,000 Equipment Campaign. Would you be interested in helping our students by contributing to this endeavor?
As parents, we have been struck by the unique nature of this sport and the many opportunities it provides our sons and daughters. Foremost, the sport teaches teamwork in a manner not common to other sports; there are no "star" rowers in a boat; the rowers must function as a unit if their boat is to succeed in the race. Rowing enables students of all sizes to participate; even the smallest student has an opportunity to compete. There is "civil sportsmanship," in which the goal is positive competition with other teams. During competitions, when a problem arises, competing teams share boats, parts, and even rowers, so that all teams may compete in the races. This unique sport places our students on the waterways, and is building an understanding and appreciation for the notable natural resources of Hampton Roads; vital resources of which they will hopefully be the stewards in their adult years.
Would you please consider helping our students and this program by making a contribution to the Equipment Campaign?
